Meet Jessica
Owner & Lead Facilitator
Ember & Root is the heartwork of Jessica McConnell, shaped by her 14 years as a public elementary school teacher and librarian—and her unexpected journey into homeschooling one of her three children.
From the classroom to the library to her own kitchen table, Jessica has seen that children learn in remarkably different, yet equally powerful ways. She believes every child deserves access to spaces where they are given choice and are free to explore, question, create, and grow in ways that are meaningful to them.
Jessica spent five years teaching in Baton Rouge, LA, and nine wonderful years with Fayetteville Public Schools. She brings to Ember & Root a passion for curating thoughtful resources, designing hands-on learning experiences, and nurturing strong, connected communities wherever learning happens.
Homeschool Enrichment
A learner-directed homeschool program for ages 7–14.
At Ember & Root, kids follow their interests, set personal goals, and grow at their own pace—all within a supportive, mixed-age community. With guidance from thoughtful facilitators and access to lots of co curricular, hands on materials, learners build confidence, curiosity, and purpose through meaningful, self-directed experiences.
Afterschool
SPARK CLUB
A premium choice-filled extracurricular program for grades 1-6.The Spark Club offers high-interest activities and themes and rich resources in a small group setting where kids have the freedom to explore what excites them most. With hands-on materials and caring guidance, learners grow their knowledge in ways that are meaningful to them—through curiosity, creativity, and community.
Ember &Rooted
Offered outside our regular program times, these special, topic specific, workshops are open to all kids—whether they're new to Ember & Root or already part of our community.
Each session is packed with engaging, hands-on learning designed to spark creativity and build an interest based skill. Throughout the year, we’ll offer something for every personality and age group—from bold performers to quiet tinkerers. Always hands on and structured for community.
